Distinguishing DID from Personality Disorders, Autism Spectrum, Bipolar, and Psychosis
Hosted by Kathy Steele
In this session we will explore how to distinguish the unstable and fragmented sense of self that occurs in personality disorders – especially Borderline and Narcissistic – from the dissociative divisions of self in DID. We will also explore how to distinguish Autism spectrum, Bipolar disorder and the psychotic disorders from DID based on clinical interviewing.

Participants will be able to:
1. Compare self fragmentation and instability in personality disorders from DID
2. Explain how self fragmentation in Autism spectrum and Bipolar disorder differ from DID

Issues in Diagnosis of DID: Resistance to the Diagnosis, False Positives, Self Diagnosis, and Comorbidity
Hosted by Kathy Steele
Participants will learn whether and how to present a diagnosis of a dissociative disorder to a client and how to determine whether sharing the diagnosis will be helpful. We will also explore the challenges of helping client who come to therapy with a self-diagnosis, which may or may not be accurate. Clinical interviewing is critical in making the distinction between false positives and actual dissociative disorders. Finally, we will examine the challenges of diagnosis when there are multiple symptoms that fit with several diagnoses.

Participants will be able to:
1. Explain whether and how to present a diagnosis of DID to a client
2. Apply at least three (3) strategies to work with clients who self-report the diagnosis of DID, but who may not have the diagnosis
3. Apply at least three (3) strategies to prioritize which symptoms and disorders should be addressed in the moment with clients who suffer from multiple comorbid problems.
