Are you an EMDR therapist looking to enhance your skills when working with neurodivergent clients? This comprehensive program is designed to help you adapt and refine your EMDR practice to better support individuals with neurodivergent diagnosis such as autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, and more.

Program Information:

This program focuses on supporting EMDR clinicians to integrate principles of the Neurodiversity-Affirming model into therapy with Autistic and/or ADHD clients. Anna Clarke is an openly Autistic/ADHD psychologist and advocate. Their workshops are informed by lived experience, relevant literature, and best-practise guidelines.

Autistic and ADHD individuals are at high-risk of experiencing multiple adverse life events and subsequent negative life outcomes including. Despite being over-represented in clinical settings, there are multiple barriers which prevent Autistic and ADHD individuals from accessing appropriate support. Research highlights that one significant barrier is that therapists report lacking confidence and training necessary to work with this population.

The AIP model has strong utility for case formulation with Autistic and ADHD individuals. Societal norms and expectations for social communication and behaviour are not aligned with the needs of Autistic and ADHD individuals in mind. Therefore EMDR clinicians have the potential to play a pivotal role in supporting Neurodivergent people to recover from the impacts of traumatic experiences, including addressing the 'social trauma' of navigating a world not built for them.

Key learning objectives include:
-
Understanding core principles of Neurodiversity Affirming Practise
-
Reviewing best practise guidelines for working with Autism/ADHD
-
Applying the AIP model to case formulation and treatment planning with Autistic and ADHD individuals
-
Understanding common adverse life events for Neurodivergent people and subsequent mental health impacts
-
Identifying common negative core beliefs
-
Adapting all phases of EMDR therapy using a Neurodiversity-Affirming framework including;
-
Communication differences
-
Rapport building
-
Addressing power imbalance in therapy
-
Addressing sensory needs
-
Maintaining concentration during processing
-
Working with demand avoidance, aphantasia, alexythimia, and interoceptive differences
-

01 SESSION
EMDR 2.0 Basics
Friday Nov 15, 2024
1:00 PM – 3:30 PM ET (60 days access to the recording)
EMDR 2.0 is a version of the standard EMDR procedure with a number of adjustments regarding the implementation of the treatment. These adjustments are based on clinical experience with the treatment of patients with complex PTSD, and scientific research into working memory theory and the effects of working memory-loading tasks on traumatic memories. EMDR 2.0, can help the therapist improve the effectiveness of EMDR therapy. For example, what should be done if SUD does not decrease, and EMDR therapy does not work? In this teaching session, therapists learn various techniques to overcome such obstacles. This will be supported by case studies, demonstrations and video footage of sessions with real patients.

Participants will be able to:
-
Describe at least two (2) startegies for when the SUD do not decrease
-
Identify ways to motivate clients for processing memories that have a high level of disturbance.
-
Identify several titration techniques to keep processing memories.
