Workshop Description

Join leading experts Ad De Jongh, Ph.D. and Suzy Matthijssen, Ph.D. in this comprehensive workshop designed to address the complexities of Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) and Dissociation. Using EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) as a key therapeutic tool, this workshop will guide you through evidence-based strategies to support individuals experiencing these challenging conditions. Participants will learn to manage client fears in confronting memories and emotions, the potential for severe abreactions, dissociative reactions that limit access to trauma memories, and situations where SUD levels do not decline or cognitive distortions (such as guilt) fail to shift. The workshop will also address concurrent issues often seen in Complex PTSD, such as negative self-concept, emotional dysregulation, and difficulties in relationships, which may require additional clinical work.

Through a combination of theory, case examples, and practical demonstrations, you will gain a deeper understanding of C-PTSD, its dissociative symptoms, and how EMDR can be effectively tailored to treat these conditions. You’ll explore advanced EMDR protocols, learn how to assess dissociation within trauma processing, and discover strategies to navigate the unique needs of clients with complex trauma histories.

Drawing from the scientific research and clinical experiences of the presenters and their teams, who have worked with nearly 14,000 clients receiving intensive trauma-focused treatment for severe PTSD, the workshop will provide powerful treatment strategies specifically designed for individuals with Complex PTSD.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. List diagnostic criteria for Complex PTSD that distinguish it from PTSD

  2. Describe three (3) or more features of an EMDR informed evidence-based, trauma-focused approach to Complex PTSD

  3. Identify key features and results of EMDR intensive treatment for Complex PTSD

  4. Explain the relationship between affect phobia and dissociation and how to address it

  5. Describe three (3) or more methods presented for managing dissociation when it arises during EMDR reprocessing sessions

  6. Explain three (3) or more examples of cognitive interweaves for Complex PTSD
