Course Description

This course is for clinicians who wish to integrate somatic interventions within their clinical work with clients. It is suitable for therapists who have formal training in somatic interventions, as well as for those who do not.

The focus of this course will be on the application of somatic interventions as it relates to attachment, trauma, and neurobiology.

The body is a rich source of both clinical challenges and resources. The body can continue to hold the felt sense of trauma even when the client is able to cognitively recognize the danger is over. Furthermore, the body holds memories of positive experiences that are powerful resources when they can be accessed.

While talk therapy is incredibly useful, it meets its limits when the somatic experience of the client cannot be shifted with words alone, creating a rift between cognitive knowing and somatic knowing. We will explore how to bridge that rift with foundational somatic keys to healing in clients who have attachment and other types of chronic trauma. Participants will learn about the connections between emotions, the body, and trauma. While neurobiology generally focuses on what happens in the brain, we will focus on what happens in the body when neurobiological processes are activated.

The therapist’s body is also a rich source of communication – and sometimes struggles – so we will also examine our own somatic process and how to help ourselves engage more fully in being present with our bodily experience and shift it when needed. Participants will learn how to weave basic somatic tracking and interventions with their usual therapeutic approaches.

Finally, we will explore how to work with non-verbal and preverbal trauma that is primarily expressed in somatic form.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the connection between emotions and somatic experience.

  2. Describe at least two (2) effective ways to integrate somatic approaches with more traditional therapeutic approaches.

  3. Use at least five (5) interventions that can effectively change the persistent somatic experience of highly traumatized clients.

  4. Demonstrate personal somatic awareness during sessions to increase the ability to utilize it effectively in treatment.

  5. Apply at least four (4) interventions to effectively work with non-verbal or pre-verbal trauma that is somatically expressed.
