Course Description

Attachment and defense against threat (flight, fight, freeze and faint) involve inborn neural networks that guide our behavior. These play a central role in understanding and treating complex trauma. These are called motivational systems because they motivate us to act in specific ways, with particular emotions, perceptions and goals. But what prompts traumatized clients to relate in ways that attempt attachment connection but are unsuccessful? We will examine several common relational strategies that are based on other social motivational systems beyond attachment that also influence how we relate to others: collaboration, caregiving, play, competition/ ranking, and sexuality. When we function adaptively, motivational systems – along with attachment, operate unconsciously in the background and shift in seamless harmony, supporting adaptation to the present. However, traumatized clients can engage these other systems as maladaptive relational strategies when attachment is overwhelming or conflicted. We will explore social motivational systems beyond attachment, the role they play in relational strategies, and how to work with them.
